National DNA Bank-Carlos III

The National DNA Bank-Carlos III (BNADN) is an S&T platform promoted and supported by the Carlos III Health Institute(Instituto de Salud Carlos III) of the Ministry of Economy and competitiveness of Spain, whose main goal is to support genetic/genomic biomedical research.

Since its creation in 2004, the BNADN has been one of the pioneers in the field of biobanks in Spain and a reference biobank respecting the technical procedures employed and the compliance with ethical and legal requirements regarding the use of biological samples. The mission of the BNADN is to provide the scientific community with high quality biological samples (DNA, RNA, plasma, cells,…) and associated data from donors (healthy subjects and/ or patients) in order to promote biomedical research on genetic/genomic diversity associated with health, disease pathogenesis, therapy and human evolution, with special emphasis on the population living in Spain, and to facilitate the participation of Spanish researchers in major projects and international research consortia.

Likewise, the BNADN also offers DNA extraction and cell immortalization services, education and training courses on biobanking, external quality control service and advice on creation and management of biobanks. Regarding training and education, the BNADN and the University of Salamanca organize a Course of Expert/Master on Biobanks since the 2012-2013 academic year.

Since February 2006, their activities are certified with the Quality Certification UNE-EN-ISO 9001:2000.

Currently, the BNADN consists of one Central Node hold at the University of Salamanca and is directed by Prof. Alberto Orfao. Within their current activities it actively participate in the Spanish National Biobank Network where coordinates the Working Program in Strategic Collections. Furthermore, the BNADN is collaborating with other national and international projects, such as 1000 genomes consortium, International Cancer Genome Consortium or Public Population Project in Genomics.
